Customer Reviews
I was on my way out to an appointment when I saw our garage had partially flooded. It was fairly obvious the drain had backed up. I called Roto Rooter ... while waiting for my appointment & they scheduled it in a perfect time frame. Not only that, Jim called just before I got home to let us know he'd be there within the hour - the early end of the window. Once he showed up, he determined my guess was correct, set up the equipment & got the drain flowing again quickly. My husband & I couldn't have been more pleased with the service.
My washing machine drain was partially blocked somewhere in the line. Deep water loads would overflow the pipeonto the floor of my garage. I called RR yesterday and was told ... AJ would call me back within 20 minutes. When he called I told him of the issue and he said he'd try to fit me in. AJ was unable to make it yesterday, so he said he'd put me on the list for first thing this morning. RR called me this morning and said a plumber was ready to head over. Mel came by and got right to work. The area was already prepped and everything had been moved out of his way, It only took a few minutes for Mel to find the problem. An old piece of washer drain hose (from who knows when) was sitting some feet down the pipe and was causing the slow drainage. We tested it with the garden hose on full for several minutes and it worked perfectly. Mel was exceptionally polite and knowledgeable and it was a pleasure dealing with him. I would definitely call RR again in the future, if/when the need arises.
Trey showed up late, however, his service was worth it. He did a professional job and what a nice guy he is. I let him know the schedule ... that the office confirmed and emailed, he apologized and let us know his travels throughout the day. We understood. Good Job Roto-Rooter!
Reno's water distribution system has served the community for decades, and the city has acknowledged the need for infrastructure upgrades by launching Phase One of a multi-phase renewal plan. Aging water mains experience pressure fluctuations, mineral buildup, and occasional service disruptions that affect every connected property. When a main break or pressure drop occurs, the surge and sediment disturbance can damage water heaters, loosen fittings, and introduce particulate matter into household pipes. Roto-Rooter helps Reno homeowners protect their private systems against the effects of an aging municipal network with targeted maintenance, leak detection, and equipment upgrades.
The city is positioned to regain access to forgivable loans and infrastructure grants to modernize its water system, signaling a commitment to long-term improvement. Roto-Rooter supports these efforts on the private side by maintaining, repairing, and upgrading household and commercial plumbing systems throughout Reno.

Drain Cleaning Built for Reno's Hard Water Conditions
Reno's municipal water supply carries dissolved minerals that accumulate inside drain pipes, narrowing openings and catching grease, hair, and food particles into persistent clogs. Kitchen drains bear the heaviest load, collecting cooking grease that solidifies as it cools and bonds with mineral scale on pipe walls. Bathroom drains trap hair and soap residue in the same mineral matrix. Roto-Rooter's experienced plumbing technicians use mechanical drain cleaning equipment to break apart blockages and high-pressure water jetting to scour pipe walls clean, restoring full flow capacity.
Drain Cleaning Services Include:
• Sink drains (kitchen, bathroom, utility)
• Toilet drains and clogs
• Floor drains
• Shower and bathtub drains
• Storm drains
• Main sewer drains
Sewer Line Repair on Reno's Rolling Terrain
Reno's gently rolling topography means sewer lines must follow grade changes that introduce additional stress points at every transition. Sandy loam soil provides less lateral support than dense clay, allowing pipe sections to shift more readily when heavy rains saturate the ground or extended dry spells remove soil moisture. Root intrusion compounds the problem, as mature live oaks and mesquite trees pursue moisture inside cracked sewer joints. Roto-Rooter uses video camera inspection to survey the full length of your sewer line, identifying root masses, bellied sections, and joint separations before recommending the most appropriate repair method.
Sewer Line Services Include:
• Video camera sewer line inspection
• Mechanical root cutting and removal
• High-pressure water jetting
• Trenchless pipe lining and repair
• Traditional excavation and replacement
• New sewer line installation
Backflow Prevention and Testing in Reno
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requires annual testing of backflow prevention devices to protect the public water supply from contamination. Commercial properties, irrigation systems, and specific residential configurations in Reno must maintain certified backflow assemblies. Roto-Rooter provides testing, installation, repair, and certification of backflow prevention devices, ensuring your property stays in compliance with state and local requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions in Reno
How do I prevent pipes from freezing in my Reno home?
Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, attics, and garages with pipe insulation rated for Reno's winter temperatures. During cold snaps, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let faucets drip slightly to keep water moving. If a pipe does freeze, never use an open flame - apply gentle heat with a hair dryer or warm towels. Call 775-356-3866 if a pipe has already burst.
Does Reno's hard water contribute to plumbing emergencies?
Yes. Reno's water contains elevated levels of calcium and magnesium that deposit mineral scale inside pipes and fixtures over time. This scale narrows pipe diameter, restricts flow, and accelerates corrosion in metal pipes. The buildup also shortens water heater lifespan by insulating sediment against the heating element, leading to premature tank failure.
Does Roto-Rooter handle water heater emergencies in Reno?
Yes. Our technicians repair and replace both tank and tankless water heaters. We carry common parts on our service vehicles to resolve most failures on the first visit. Given Reno's hard water, we recommend annual water heater maintenance to flush sediment and extend tank life.
How quickly can Roto-Rooter respond to a plumbing emergency in Reno?
Roto-Rooter responds 24/7 to emergency plumbing calls throughout Reno and Washoe County. Our technicians are dispatched from fully equipped service vehicles positioned across the Truckee Meadows for fast response at any hour.
What causes sewer backups in Reno homes?
Tree root intrusion into aging sewer laterals is the most common cause. Roots grow through cracks that widen during seasonal ground movement and seek moisture inside sewer lines. Hard water mineral deposits also narrow sewer pipe diameter over time. A video camera inspection can identify the specific cause in your home.
Are older Reno neighborhoods at higher risk for plumbing emergencies?
Yes. Homes in areas like Old Southwest, Wells Avenue, and parts of Midtown that were built before modern PVC plumbing became standard often still have galvanized steel supply lines and clay tile sewer connections. These materials deteriorate over decades of exposure to hard water and thermal cycling, making them more prone to sudden failure.
Does Roto-Rooter provide commercial emergency plumbing in Reno?
Roto-Rooter provides 24/7 emergency plumbing for restaurants, hotels, casinos, office buildings, and commercial facilities across Reno and Washoe County. Our commercial equipment handles the larger pipe sizes and higher-capacity systems in commercial properties.
Why do my drains clog so frequently in Reno?
Reno's water from the Truckee River and deep groundwater wells contains elevated calcium and magnesium. These minerals deposit scale inside drain pipes continuously, narrowing the opening and creating rough surfaces where grease, hair, and debris catch. Annual professional cleaning removes this buildup before it causes complete blockages.
Can chemical drain cleaners handle Reno's mineral buildup?
Chemical drain cleaners cannot dissolve mineral scale. The calcium carbonate deposits in Reno drain pipes require mechanical cutting or high-pressure hydro jetting to remove. Chemical products may open a small channel through softer clogs temporarily, but the mineral scale remains and catches new debris quickly.
How does winter weather affect my drains in Reno?
Reno winters bring nighttime temperatures well below freezing while afternoons warm above 32 degrees. That daily freeze-thaw cycle stresses pipe joints and cracks connections, especially in crawl spaces, garages, and exterior-wall runs. Damaged joints develop gaps where roots enter and debris accumulates. Call 775-356-3866 if you notice new slow drains after a cold snap.
How often should Reno homeowners schedule drain cleaning?
Annual drain cleaning is recommended for most Reno homes due to persistent mineral buildup. Homes with older galvanized or cast iron pipes, mature trees near sewer lines, or properties in the historic districts may benefit from cleaning every six months. A camera inspection helps determine the right frequency.
Will hydro jetting damage my older pipes?
Roto-Rooter technicians adjust water pressure based on pipe material and condition. For older cast iron or galvanized pipes showing corrosion, lower pressure settings effectively remove mineral scale without risking damage. A camera inspection before jetting confirms the pipe can handle the process safely.
What causes the white residue around my drains and fixtures?
White residue around drains, faucets, and showerheads is calcium and magnesium scale from Reno's hard water. The same minerals depositing visible residue on fixtures are building up inside your drain pipes. Professional cleaning removes the internal deposits and restores full flow.
Does Roto-Rooter handle commercial drain cleaning in Reno?
Roto-Rooter provides commercial drain cleaning for restaurants, casinos, hotels, and office buildings across the Reno-Sparks metro. Our commercial equipment handles lines up to 10 inches in diameter with scheduled maintenance available.
Will hydro jetting damage my older Reno pipes?
Roto-Rooter technicians always inspect the pipe with a camera before jetting. Pressure is adjusted for pipe material and condition. Older clay tile and cast iron receive lower settings that clean effectively without risk. If structural damage exists, the technician recommends repair first.
How does Reno's hard water affect drain pipes?
Mineral-rich water deposits calcium and magnesium scale on pipe walls continuously. Over years, this scale narrows pipe diameter and creates rough surfaces that accelerate grease buildup. Hydro jetting is one of the few methods that effectively removes hardened mineral deposits.
How often should Reno homes schedule hydro jetting?
Given Reno's hard water, most homes benefit from hydro jetting every one to two years to prevent scale accumulation. Properties with mature trees near sewer lines may need annual service for root management.
Can hydro jetting prevent frozen pipe problems?
Clean pipes with full diameter handle water flow more efficiently. Removing buildup that restricts flow reduces the chance of water pooling and freezing in pipe low spots during winter. However, pipe insulation and heat protection remain the primary defense against freezing.
Does hydro jetting remove years of mineral buildup?
Yes. High-pressure water breaks the bond between mineral deposits and pipe walls, even deposits that have accumulated over many years. The water flushes all loosened scale downstream, restoring the pipe to its original interior diameter.
Does Roto-Rooter offer commercial hydro jetting in Reno?
Roto-Rooter provides commercial hydro jetting for restaurants, casinos, hotels, and retail spaces across the Reno-Sparks metro area. Scheduled maintenance programs prevent unexpected drain failures.
What does hydro jetting cost in Reno?
Cost depends on pipe size, buildup severity, and accessibility. Your technician provides a clear estimate after camera inspection. Call 775-356-3866 for details.
How do I know if I have a hidden water leak in my Reno home?
Common signs include unexplained increases in your water bill, running water sounds when fixtures are off, warm or damp spots on floors, and new cracks in walls or foundation. Check your water meter with all water turned off - if the dial continues to move, call Roto-Rooter at 775-356-3866 for professional leak detection.
Can Roto-Rooter detect leaks without damaging my walls or flooring?
Yes. Our experienced plumbing technicians use acoustic sensors, thermal imaging cameras, and pressure testing to locate leaks non-invasively. These methods pinpoint the exact leak location so repair access is limited to the smallest possible area.
How cold does it need to get for pipes to freeze in Reno?
Pipes can freeze within hours when temperatures drop below 20 degrees, especially in uninsulated spaces like crawl spaces, garages, attics, and exterior walls. Reno's high desert climate brings extended periods below freezing during winter, making pipe insulation and heat cable essential for protecting your plumbing system.
How does Reno's hard water damage pipes?
Reno's water carries calcium and magnesium that form limescale deposits inside pipes. Over time, this scale hardens and narrows the pipe opening, increasing pressure on joints and creating corrosion points. Copper pipes are particularly affected as the mineral deposits eat away at the metal, thinning pipe walls until pinhole leaks develop.
How long does a professional leak detection inspection take?
Most residential inspections take one to two hours depending on property size and plumbing complexity. Our technicians arrive with all necessary equipment on every service call.
Does Roto-Rooter provide commercial leak detection in Reno?
Yes. Roto-Rooter provides leak detection for commercial buildings, restaurants, retail spaces, and industrial facilities throughout the Reno metro area.
Why should I choose Roto-Rooter for leak detection in Reno?
Roto-Rooter has been a trusted name in plumbing since 1935. Our Reno technicians respond promptly with fully equipped service vehicles carrying the detection technology needed to locate leaks on the first visit.
How do I know if my water heater needs repair or replacement?
If your unit is under 8 years old and experiencing inconsistent temperatures, unusual noises, or minor leaks at connections, repair is usually the cost-effective choice. If the tank itself is leaking, the unit is over 10 years old, or repair costs exceed half the replacement cost, a new water heater is the better investment. Call Roto-Rooter at 775-356-3866 for a professional assessment.
How often should I flush my water heater in Reno?
Annual flushing is recommended for most Reno homes. Flushing removes mineral sediment that accumulates at the bottom of the tank, reducing heating efficiency and causing popping or rumbling sounds. Homes with particularly hard water may benefit from semi-annual flushing.
What causes my water heater to make popping sounds?
Popping or rumbling sounds indicate steam bubbles trapped beneath layers of mineral sediment at the bottom of the tank. When the burner or heating element heats the sediment layer, water trapped underneath turns to steam and escapes through the deposits. A professional tank flush resolves the noise and restores efficiency.
Does Roto-Rooter repair tankless water heaters in Reno?
Yes. Roto-Rooter's experienced plumbing technicians service all major tankless water heater brands including Rinnai, Navien, Noritz, and Rheem. We perform diagnostics, descaling, part replacement, and full system maintenance. Call 775-356-3866 to schedule tankless service.
What should I do if my water heater is leaking?
Turn off the power supply - set the gas valve to pilot or switch off the electric breaker. Shut off the cold water inlet valve on top of the unit. Note the leak location to help the technician diagnose the problem faster. Call Roto-Rooter at 775-356-3866 for prompt service.
How long does a water heater last in Reno?
A well-maintained tank water heater typically lasts 8-12 years in Reno. Tankless units can last 15-20 years with proper maintenance. Actual lifespan depends on water quality, usage patterns, and maintenance frequency. Annual professional inspection extends the useful life of any water heater.
Does Roto-Rooter offer transparent pricing for water heater service in Reno?
