On 12/30/2017, I heard a gurgling sound in the kitchen drain. I had used Roto-Rooter once before and was extremely satisfied. They responded within two hours ..problem fixed. Because of ... the gurgling sound coming from the kitchen drain on this occasion and having had one previous problem with my main sewage line...I asked they do a preventative maintenance for me. The technician was very polite and got the job done quickly. Within five days, 1/3/2018, I noticed overflow in the front yard through the "check line." I called Roto-Rooter again. This time the office staff seemed aloof and uncertain as to my call history. After having repeated the information multiple times as to my address, the original call reason (preventative maintenance), and now a new issue after only five days since being serviced, I was informed I would receive a call prior to the technicians arrival. The office staff demeanor was, in my opinion, "they'll get there when they get there." I work night shifts and sleep during the day therefore I was hoping to get some answer as to a more specific time. In other words...the office staff seemed unprofessional and rude! None the less I was frustrated and I'm sure the office staff could feel that frustration through the telephone. While waiting for that phone call that never came but a soft knock on the door, I realized the new technician was at the door. It dawned on me while speaking to him that the technician five days earlier had let a large pine cone fall in to the "check pipe" AFTER he ran the snake. I think under the circumstances he SHOULD have re-snaked the drain and my problems of a full blockage would never have occurred. Did I hear anything from the office staff such as "Gee, sir, we're sorry there's a new problem but we'll handle this quickly"....no! I get this attitude of "we'll get there when we get there." I have trusted Roto-Rooter for many years but with the office staff uncaring insensitivity and the first technicians failure to re-snake the drain system AFTER the pine cone fell into the drain...I wonder if another service wouldn't be more appropriate. I have always been one to praise professionalism. I seldom make complaints but in this instance...I think there is validity in my perception of a lack of professional demeanor on part of the office staff and the idea by the first technician that the pine cone would wash through. My paychecks are precious to me therefore when spending money...I want my money's worth! Again, I had NO PROBLEM with the professional demeanor of both service technicians they were very polite and understanding. I took the professional opinion of the first technician that the pine cone would most likely wash through. I was wrong! It won't happen again!

Common Plumbing Challenges in Montgomery

Montgomery's red clay soil and Alabama's warm, humid climate contribute to several recurring plumbing problems. Knowing what to watch for helps homeowners catch issues before they escalate.

  • clay soil shifting and pipe stress
  • tree root intrusion
  • storm water management
  • aging cast iron drain lines

Red clay soil affects slab and crawl-space foundations throughout Montgomery. Slab foundations make leak detection critical, since hidden leaks beneath the slab can cause significant structural damage.

Frequently Asked Questions in Montgomery

Does Montgomery's clay soil damage plumbing?

Yes. Clay soil expands when wet and contracts when dry, creating seasonal movement that stresses underground pipes, separates joints, and displaces pipe sections. This creates cracks where tree roots enter and low spots where waste collects. Properties with older clay tile or cast iron sewer lines are most affected by this constant soil pressure.

Why is fast response important for plumbing emergencies in Montgomery?

Montgomery's humid subtropical climate promotes rapid mold growth on wet materials - often within 24 to 48 hours. Fast professional response to burst or leaking pipes, sewer backups, and water heater failures helps prevent secondary mold damage that adds significantly to repair costs.

Does Roto-Rooter handle water heater emergencies in Montgomery?

Yes. Our technicians repair and replace both tank and tankless water heaters. We carry common parts on our service vehicles for first-visit resolution.

How quickly can Roto-Rooter respond to an emergency in Montgomery?

Roto-Rooter responds 24/7 to emergency plumbing calls throughout Montgomery and Montgomery County. Our technicians are dispatched from fully equipped service vehicles for fast response at any hour.

What causes sewer backups in Montgomery homes?

Tree root intrusion into aging sewer laterals is the most common cause. Clay soil movement creates joint separations that give roots entry points, and heavy rainfall adds volume to already restricted lines. Video camera inspection identifies root intrusion and pipe damage before a full backup occurs.

Are older Montgomery homes at higher risk for emergencies?

Yes. Homes with original galvanized steel pipes and aging sewer connections face increasing risk as humidity-driven corrosion and clay soil movement weaken pipe walls over decades. Regular plumbing inspection can identify vulnerable sections before they fail.

Does Roto-Rooter provide commercial emergency plumbing in Montgomery?

Roto-Rooter provides 24/7 emergency plumbing for restaurants, office buildings, retail spaces, and commercial facilities across Montgomery and Montgomery County.

How does Montgomery's clay soil affect my drains?

Montgomery's expansive clay swells when wet and contracts when dry, creating constant soil movement that shifts pipe joints out of alignment. These offset joints trap debris and create low spots where waste collects, leading to recurring blockages.

What causes recurring drain clogs in Montgomery?

Tree root intrusion is the most persistent cause. Montgomery's year-round warm climate means roots never go dormant, growing continuously into sewer connections. Clay soil displacement and pipe corrosion also contribute. A camera inspection identifies the specific cause.

How often should Montgomery homeowners clean their drains?

Annual cleaning is recommended for homes with mature trees near sewer lines or pre-1970 homes with original pipe materials. Properties in low-lying areas prone to storm backup may benefit from cleaning every six months.

Will hydro jetting damage my older pipes?

Roto-Rooter technicians adjust water pressure based on pipe material and condition. For older cast iron or clay tile pipes, lower pressure settings effectively remove buildup without damage. A camera inspection before jetting confirms the pipe integrity.

Does Alabama's climate accelerate pipe deterioration?

Yes. High humidity and year-round warmth accelerate corrosion in cast iron and galvanized pipes. Sustained moisture keeps clay soil active, and warm temperatures keep roots growing continuously. Annual drain maintenance helps catch problems early.

How long does drain cleaning take?

Most residential drain cleaning jobs take 30 to 90 minutes. Main sewer line cleanings with camera inspection typically take one to two hours.

Does Roto-Rooter handle commercial drains in Montgomery?

Roto-Rooter provides commercial drain cleaning for restaurants, office buildings, and retail spaces across Montgomery. Our commercial equipment handles lines up to 10 inches in diameter with scheduled maintenance programs available.
